Courses portal Dokeos

As we are preparing for the summer courses which are still a long way ahead, the library has started exploring DOKEOS, an open source 'electronic learning environment'. Together with the Hague Academy of International Law, we are setting up all course materials for the summer students inside this elearning portal. It is not yet possible to register for one of the courses – we are still exploring – however, you can have a quick peek at an overview of Hague Academy courses in private and public international law 2009 at elearning.ppl.nl.

Poken in the library

PokenFrom today, the peacepalacelibrary has its own POKEN! A poken is a little gadget which works like a digital name card. All the information you want to share is on the Poken: a little USB stick with a funny face. When you meet others, and want to exchange your contact information on, for example, Facebook, LinkedIn, MSN, Flickr, Hyves, and give others your telephone number, website and visiting address, all you have to do is shake hands and you exchange everything! The peacepalacelibrary’s 'busy bee' poken is on the reference desk, so you are most welcome to come to the library to shake hands with us, and add us to your network!

CIAO database online

We are extremely happy to announce our new subscription to the CIAO Columbia International Affairs Online database. For anyone interested in international relations and international law this is a Fundgrube or a mine of information. Online since 1991, it is monthly updated. CIAO covers working papers from a very long list of think tanks and research institutions from all over the world, with federative search possibilities. The same applies for the journals, books and policy briefs. Students can find original case studies, written by leading scholars and course packs. Every month, CIAO features a Focus study with links to CIAO and outside sources, even radio programs. January 2009 focuses on Israel's incursion into Gaza. The interactive atlas is very useful, and the very friendly user guide doesn't seem to be needed!

New RSS keyword feeds available

The library has made new RSS feeds available! We created feeds for all keywords on our website, so if you want to keep up to date with new books or articles with a specific keyword, just look for that word in our keyword list and use the orange  RSS button to subscribe.
If the window you see is empty, this means there were no new titles in our catalogue with this keyword for the last 3 months. However, if you subscribe, you will be the first one to know!
Please note we are still having some problems with the longer keywords, so the feed might not work there. Let us know if you need assistance (chat or email), we are trying to fix it as soon as we can.

The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS), the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL) and the Peace Palace Library will hold a two-day conference in The Hague to mark the 60th anniversary of the Genocide Convention, on December 7 and 8, 2008.

At this interdisciplinary "60 Years Genocide Convention", historians and lawyers will examine how to achieve a proper balance between the popular perception of genocide and its legal definition, based on the 1948 Convention. For registration and information, please go to www.chgs.nl or www.jur.uva.nl/acil.

blogging in the library

Recently, six of our library staff started a blog about international law in recent news events, related to books and articles we have in our library catalogue. The blog covers a broad range of events, for example: the recent US Supreme Court decision on habeas corpus and Guantanamo Bay; the new Benelux Treaty; transboundary hooliganism in sports; land claims between countries; Amsterdam canals and cultural heritage; and the international food crisis.

Although international law in recent news events covers a broad area of subjects, all blog posts have links to more materials in our library catalogue through related keywords. This way, the library provides more background materials for further reading in the areas covered in the post.

Read this library blog directly at http://peacepalacelibrary-weekly.blogspot.com/, or choose 'blogs' from the main menu. Here you can read an overview of the first few lines of the blog post, and click through to read the full post. Leave your comments if you like!.

You can be alerted on new content by subscribing through RSS.
